Sevenoaks, according to the UK census of 2011, is a town in Kent with a population of 29,506. The name ‘Sevenoaks’ is derived from the Old English word ‘seouenaca’, the name given to a small chapel near seven oaks on The Vine. Records for Sevenoaks begin in the 13th century when Sevenoaks was given martket status. Sevenoaks School, at the end of Sevenoaks’ High Street, is one of the oldest lay foundations in England. It was founded by William Sevenoaks in 1432. In 1560 the famous Sevenoaks School was granted patent and became known as ‘Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School’.

Modern day Sevenoaks has a large commuting population, travelling mostly between Sevenoaks and London. Sevenoaks’ main industrial area is situated to the north of the town, as is Sevenoaks Quarry. The shopping area on High Street is Sevenoaks’ major retail hub. The High Street is a typical small town centre, giving Sevenoaks the rural atmosphere much enjoyed by its residents.

Famous music string manufacturer RotoSound is based in Sevenoaks. The company’s strings have been used by Jimi Hendrix, Brian May and Pete Townshend.
